To Prosper and be in Health (3 John 2)

Resource Details

Description

In this excellent short piece, William Jay tells us what true biblical prosperity and health are. We don’t want to be like those who have “so much sail and so little ballast” to use Jay’s analogy, in other words, those who have too much temporal prosperity and not enough grace to stabilise them.

From the conclusion, Jay exhorts us, “Let us therefore examine our wishes. Let us regulate them with grace. Let us seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness. Let us ask for no more of temporal things than we can bear—ever praying for our friends and ourselves, that we may prosper and be in health even as our souls prosper.”

This sermon is edited from William Jay’s devotional, Morning and Evening Exercises (January 8, morning), first published in 1854. The full PDF format is available here. The Rev. William Jay (6 May 1769 – 27 December 1853) was an English Congregationalist minister. During his ministry, he became a popular pulpit orator, author, scholar, and one of C.H. Spurgeon’s favourite preachers. Jay’s writing is warm and devotional.
